WRUP: It’s a dead man’s party edition

Happy weekend (and happy almost-Hallow’s End!), everyone! Are you sitting comfortably? Catching up on a little Warcraft time after another tedious work-week? Of course the WoW.com team is in-game this weekend, bringing down bosses and collecting loots and maybe — just maybe — having a bit of fun in the process. So what are we playing this weekend? Well, we’ll tell you! C. Christian Moore (@TheArenaGuy): hopefully hitting 80 on the hunter (I’m 72 right now), gonna be doing a lot of irl work as well. -.- Going to try to watch games (baseball), I’m a HUGE baseball fan. Chase Christian (@madsushi): My guild will be continuing to work on ToGC10, we are now the #1 guild on my server in terms of strict 10 man progression so we’re hoping to push through Anub’arak this weekend! Daniel Whitcomb (@danielwhitcomb): I’m back in a daily groove, mostly so I can save up money for a few GDKP runs, so I’ll continue that. Also hoping to fit in 25-man Onyxia and 10-man Coliseum if I can this weekend. Also: Hallow’s End! I’m hoping the Horseman still drops his helm, now that I have a max level character who could wear it this time around. Dan O’Halloran: More Triumph farming via Heroic Daily Dungeons and maybe some

15 Minutes of Fame: WoW, Eh?

15 Minutes of Fame is WoW.com’s look at World of Warcraft players of all shapes and sizes — from the renowned to the relatively anonymous, the remarkable to the player next door. Tip us off to players you’d like to hear more about. It’s not every day that your interview subject offers to whip up some custom artwork depicting the 15 Minutes of Fame interview process in action – but that’s how WoW, Eh? creator Cadistra/Kelly Aarons rolls. She’s cool like that. That’s Cadistra above, chatting with my retired priestess (who’s normally found flitting about Darnassus in a Festive Green Dress with my daughter, chasing Wisps and leaving sparkly trails with her Benediction [to endless whispers of "Hey man, where does that staff drop?"] – so it was time for the wench to finally get some work done, you know?). Still, our enthusiasm for Cadistra’s artwork can’t top her own well deserved elation over a September win in Blizzard’s monthly comic contest. As part of her prize package, Kelly received three volumes of Blizzard Entertainment manga. More importantly, she’ll be considered by TOKYOPOP for contributions to upcoming volumes of both Warcraft: Legends and StarCraft: Frontline — a heady

Around Azeroth: Spawn of a mad god

I am quite a fan of all things slimy and gelatinous in the deep sea, as evidenced by my current and former desktop wallpapers. I could happily fill this column with nothing but screenshots of the various uses of the Vanquished Tentacle of C’thun and go to bed satisfied that I had made the world a better place. But the stained glass window on the left side of this room before General Vezax in Ulduar disturbs even me. Are those half babies, half tadpoles? Do the raid leaders need to keep an eye on our human ladies to make sure they don’t sneak off and procreate with the Old Ones? Ick. (Thanks to Haides of <INSIDIOUS> on Cairne for the screenshot.) Do you have any unusual, beautiful or interesting World of Warcraft images that are just collecting dust in your screenshots folder? We’d love to see them on Around Azeroth! Sharing your screenshot is as simple as e-mailing aroundazeroth@wow.com with a copy of your shot and a brief explanation of the scene. You could be featured here next! Remember to include your player name, server and/or guild if you want it mentioned. Please include the word “Azeroth” in your post so it does not get swept into the spam bin. We strongly prefer full screen shots without the UI showing — use alt-Z to remove

Breakfast Topic: Which class am I again?

Tonight, after Trials of the Grand Crusader (four down, bug to go) we decided to hop onto some alts, which led to back to back TotC 10 on my DK and Shaman. Then back to back Ony 10, also on the DK and Shaman. And because I’d spent hours in TotGC 25 on my warrior before that, by the end of the night, I had no idea what class abilities I had anymore. Between popping Army of the Dead when they called for Heroism (it’s bound to the same key) to trying desperately to use Chains of Ice when asked to Frost Shock the Ret Pally, I was in rare form. And it wasn’t just me, either: the druid healer is usually a mage, the warlock raids as a priest, and the holy paladin healing the second Ony attempt has something like 10 alts at 80. I’m surprised he even knows where he is. We got it all done, mind you, but you can really tell the difference in smoothness between our mains and our alts, even as well geared as the alts often are. So now I put it to you, gentle readers. Do you ever suffer from class bleedover? Are you ever on your druid finding yourself mashing the Consecration button, or on your Mage trying to use Hymn of Hope? Or do you find it easy to keep it all straight?

WoW Insider Show with Twisted Nether today at 3:30pm Eastern

Hey hey, our podcast is finally back on the air this afternoon at 3:30pm Eastern, and it’s gonna be a good one: Fimlys and Nibuca from the Twisted Nether Blogcast (and the new Azeroth United project) will join Turpster, Eddie “Brigwyn” Carrington and myself to talk about the past week in the World of Warcraft. I’m sure this week’s events will come up, both the Brewfest celebration and the return of Onyxia, not to mention the new patch this week (and all of the problems we’ve seen with it). Sounds like a full show! It all kicks off this afternoon at 3:30pm Eastern over on the Ustream page — if you’re around, you can tune in, listen live, and chat with us and all of our guests. Even if you’re not around, you can always email us at theshow@wow.com, and then hit up the site here on Monday when we’ll post the recording of the show over on iTunes. But as our commenters will probably tell you, the chat room is always a good time, so if you can make it, it will definitely be a lot of fun. See you there!

Details on the Alterac Valley bracket changes

Earlier this evening we posted a list of in-game fixes, and we included in that list a bit about then-unannounced changes AV; namely that the brackets were moved around and the amount of XP gained by completing objectives was changed. Bornakk has since came out and clarified the changes a bit, and provided a bit more detail. Most interestingly is that this change was intended for Patch 3.3, and was accidently applied to Patch 3.2.2. I’m not really sure how such a significant change could accidently make it in, but there we have it. From Blizzard’s mouth to your ears. It would make sense that the change be applied in Patch 3.3. Cross-server instances are coming in Patch 3.3, and that’s going to help leveling a ton. Think of how easy things will be if you just want to chain run dungeons at 1 a.m. for a few hours. That speed and leveling agility would help offset the XP nerf contained in this sudden AV change. But as it stands, we’ll have to wait a few months to allow for another quick level mechanism to be put in place. The other part of the change that was clarified is exactly what happened with the brackets. In a nutshell, the following occurred: 70 was removed from the 61 to 70 bracket There is now a bracket for 70 to 79 players 80s are now in their

Breakfast Topic: Happy Pirates’ Day, ye landlubbers!

Yaaaaaar maties, it be me again, Cap’n Phineas Blackbeard (ye may remember my old guide to the most piratical o’ quests), and I be back again, today, September the 19th, because today, ye scurvy dogs, be Pirates’ Day! My old flame Dread Captain DeMeza will be hanging out in Booty Bay and causin’ all kinds of trouble under the nose of old Baron Revilgaz, so ye can head down to the southern shores, listen to some shantys with those old swashbucklers, and maybe even win some loot. If ye like, ye can even go and visit DeMeza with the scallywags from this here WoW.com site (though between you and me, some of them smell like the inside of a whale’s belly, especially that landlubber Schramm). And of course, all of ye yellow-bellied scallywags should spend the whole day talking like a pirate as best ye can, and maybe even wear an eyepatch. Y’know, for the nightvision. And just in case ye don’t get enough grog today — HA! Get it? “Enough grog”? A good pirate knows ye can never have enough grog! — don’t forget that Brewfest starts tomorrow. Stay tuned to this here vessel for more information about how ye can get all of the achievements and titles and dragons and treasure chests ye desire. Have a great

Breakfast Topic: Why Blizzard should make authenticators mandatory on Battle.net accounts

With the impending switch to necessary Battle.net accounts, Blizzard has an opportunity to create and extremely secure and hardened gaming community. They can do this by waving a magic wand, angering a certain amount of their customer base, and eliminating in one swoop nearly all, if not all, account hacks. Blizzard can make authenticators a mandatory feature on all Battle.net accounts. There are many pros and cons such a move would bring about. Let’s examine the cons first since everyone likes to complain about stuff. The largest con would be that people would be required to have a physical piece of equipment specific to WoW and other Blizzard games. Some people would obviously not be okay with this and cancel their subscription, and others would not understand how to push a button and punch in numbers (I’m not kidding). There would be a large cry from people around the net, particularly people who enjoy scamming others out of gold and their accounts, but those are easily enough ignored. Blizzard could get around these negatives by simply giving away authenticators to everyone who doesn’t have one — make it part of the $15/month subscription. You have a subscription, you get an authenticator to keep no matter how long or short your subscription
